New Powder Road Trip

The concept of the Road Trip is an old one but a good one. It embraces the freedom to ski the very best on any given day. We tap into over 34 years of skiing and guiding in Hokkaido, as well as our network of local contacts to pick the very best skiing each and every day. Transport is via private 4WD mini bus giving us complete autonomy.

On this ultimate Hokkaido ski journey our guides take you to central Hokkaido’s premier resorts, inlcuding Furano, Kamui, Tomamu & Asahi Dake with options to ski and explore other less visited and/or backcountry destinations such as the Tokachi Mountains. For more information  on these areas, visit our Locations page. 

Tour Tips

Tip # 1: We recommend modern Alpine Touring (AT) gear for this tour. This way you can use the same kit for either on or off piste skiing, and if you are new to AT skis and bindings, you have the bonus of learning how to use AT skis and associated equipment. (skins, beacon, etc).
Tip # 2: Book flights that will arrive in Chitose or Asahikawa airport by about midday on day one of your tour. For your departure day, dont book a departure flight any earlier than about 1:00 pm.

TOMAMU EXPLORER

New for 2020, this tour takes advantage of our fantastic Alpine Backcountry Lodge, located in the heart of the Tomamu region. Owned and operated by Alpine Backcountry, our lodge provides a private and comfortable base for skiers and boarders looking to get away from hotels and crowds.

From our lodge we have beautiful touring terrain at our back door, as well access to the nearby peaks and the superb powder and terrain that they provide us. Local resorts include Tomamu and Sahoro, both with fantastic inbounds, sidecountry and lift-accessed backcountry terrain.  For more information  on these areas, visit our Locations page. 

ALPINE BACKCOUNTRY LODGE

Alpine Backcountry Lodge is located a few kilometres from the Tomamu Resort, in the Tomamu Village. The Lodge is cosy and comfortable, reminiscent of a ski club lodge rather than a hotel. It features comfortable western-style rooms, showers, bathrooms, washing machine, kitchen and a beautiful open plan dining and lounge area, complete with wood-fired combustion heater.

Local restaurants are located nearby within walking distance.

Splitboard Special

Splitboards have made the backcountry more accessible to boarders, and this includes the backcountry of Central Hokkaido, where long lines and deep powder are just waiting for those awesome turns!

Our experienced local guide Hiro Komatsu is a splitboard specialist with in-depth backcountry knowledge of Central Hokkaido, and this year for the first time he is taking dedicated splitboard groups out into the backcountry.

Ditch those pesky skiers and become part of this dedicated splitboard tour, and enjoy some of the best lines in Central Hokkaido.

The first section of this tour takes place at Asahi Dake, which features high open slopes amongst the volcanic fumaroles, and amazing lines amongst the steep and deep gullies below.

Then it’s on to the spectacular Tokachi Mountains for more deep open lines up high, and endless cruising amongst the trees as you head back down to the Inn before enjoying a traditional Onsen.  For more information  on these areas, visit our Locations page.
