Backcountry skiing is in our DNA. We have a life time of skiing and adventuring in out of the way places and pioneered guided backcountry tours in central Hokkaido in 1984. The exhilaration of reaching a distant ridge to ski an untouched wilderness powder paradise defines what backcountry skiing is for us.
We take you to the pick of Hokkaido’s backcountry ski areas. Without doubt, the Tokachi mountains and the Asahi Dake area have some of the best, most consistent powder skiing on the planet. Here light dry snow dumps for months on end. It is cold, it is dry and it is deep. As well as these two classic areas, we explore other lesser visited mountain ranges.
Add to this the presence of smoking volcanoes and an insight into this unique culture and you have the ingredients for the backcountry powder skiing holiday of a lifetime.
We also provide backcountry guiding from the resorts we visit, including Furano, Kamui, Sounkyo (Kuro Dake) & Tomamu. You can combine any of our main tours to make the ultimate backcountry skiing adventure in Hokkaido.

Snowmobile Tow-Ins
At Alpine Backcountry, we are always looking for new locations and ways to access better backcountry powder. We now have a number of select backcountry locations in Central Hokkaido where we can tow skiers in with our snowmobiles to the base of the mountain, saving the need for lengthy skinning.
Once at the mountain base, we will skin up the mountain for some amazing backcountry lines back down. After we have had our fill of backcountry trees, glades and gullies, we either ride back to the bus at the end of the day, or catch snowmobile tow-out depending on the location.
Bookings for the 2019-2020 season are now open, so contact us any time to book your Hokkaido snow adventure!

Hokkaido Backcountry Skiing
These two areas are the heart and soul of backcountry powder skiing in central Hokkaido. Here you will find the most consistent and lightest snow on the planet. We have been guiding and skiing in this area since 1984.
Asahi Dake offers a combination of lift accessed powder, as well as pure backcountry touring in the nearby mountains. There are also cross country tracks cut for both classical and skating.
Tokachi is pure backcountry, where you earn your turns in the traditional way. Each area is volcanic meaning you can enjoy natural hot spring baths or “Onsens” at our Inns. For more information on these areas, visit our Locations page.

New Backcountry Delights
This tour includes lift access and backcountry skiing at Tomamu and Furano, Yubari Range, Sounkyo, Kuro Dake and Kitami Pass. Both Tomamu and Furano have excellent lift serviced access to nearby backcountry bowls, where you can climb & ski wilderness runs in superb terrain.
From there you travel to the stunning Sounkyo Gorge in the north of Daisetsusan National Park. Here from your small Inn in this hot spring village, your guide will choose from either the nearby slopes and peak of Kuro Dake or the rarely skied area of Kitami Pass. If you cant get enough Hokkaido backcountry powder in just a week, then give some thought to our combinations. With fully guided tours up to 18 days in length, you will get to see and ski the very best of central Hokkaido’s backcountry.
The aim is to ski deep powder in the beautiful wilderness of central Hokkaido, but you will also see some great scenery and experience this culture more thoroughly, staying in some Japanese Inns, eating great food, and of course, soaking in hot spring baths. All details below.
